Austrian passport photo (Passbildkriterien)
Austrian passport and ID photos follow the official Passbildkriterien: a recent (under 6 months) colour photo of 35 x 45 mm with the face covering about two-thirds of the photo, eyes in the upper half, against a light plain background. Neutral expression with the mouth closed, eyes open and clearly visible, no hair across the face, no glare on glasses, full head with no covering unless worn for religious or medical reasons. This tool crops to the exact frame with head-size guides, print-ready at 600 dpi - on your device, nothing is uploaded.

Criteria checked against the Austrian Foreign Ministry's official passport-photograph criteria sheet (BMEIA, checked November 2026), which references passbildkriterien.at. Babies may be supported as long as the supporting hand is not visible.
The two-thirds face rule reads looser than the ICAO 70-80% band - the guide lines frame the Austrian requirement. The passport office makes the final decision.
How to do it

- Face the camera, neutral expression, mouth closed, eyes open, hair off your face.
- Upload below and frame the face between the guide lines.
- Confirm the checklist, download, and print at 35 x 45 mm on quality photo paper.
Common questions
How big must the face be?
About two-thirds of the photo, with the eyes in the upper half - the Austrian criteria state this directly; the guide lines frame that band.
Can I smile?
No - the criteria ask for a neutral expression with the mouth closed.
Can I wear glasses?
Yes, with no reflection or glare and frames clear of the eyes; removing them is easier, the criteria note.
Can I wear a head covering?
Only for religious or medical reasons.
