France passport / ID photo (France Titres - ANTS rules)
For a French passport or national ID card, France Titres (ANTS) requires a photo of 35 x 45 mm with the face measuring 32-36 mm from chin to crown, against a plain light background such as light blue or light grey - a white background is explicitly forbidden. The expression must be neutral with the mouth closed, eyes open, head bare and straight, and the photo must be less than 6 months old. This tool crops and sizes your photo to the 35:45 frame with head-size guides, print-ready at 600 dpi - on your device, nothing is uploaded.

France forbids a white background - use light blue or light grey. This tool warns when the background looks pure white.
For online pre-applications, France Titres usually expects an e-photo code from an approved booth or photographer. This page prepares a compliant print file for applications that accept a physical or self-supplied photo; the authority makes the final decision.
Rules checked against the official France Titres photo page (passeport.ants.gouv.fr, updated 30 Sep 2024, checked November 2026), aligned to ISO/IEC 19794-5:2005.
How to do it
- Take a colour photo against a plain light blue or light grey wall - not white - with even light and no shadows.
- Face the camera, head bare and straight, neutral expression, mouth closed, eyes open.
- Upload below and frame the face between the guide lines: crown near the top line, chin near the lower line.
- Confirm every checklist line, download, and print at 35 x 45 mm (600 dpi) on matte photo paper.
Common questions
Why can't the background be white?
France Titres explicitly forbids a white background - it requires a plain light colour such as light blue or light grey so the face contrasts properly.
Can I smile?
No - the rules require a neutral expression with the mouth closed.
Can I take the photo myself?
France Titres lets the applicant supply the photo, but for fully online applications an e-photo code from an approved booth or photographer is the standard route. A self-made print photo remains normal for counter applications.
Can I wear a head covering?
No - the rules state the head must be bare.
