UK passport digital photo
Applying for a UK passport online needs a digital photo at least 600 x 750 pixels and between 50 KB and 10 MB. GOV.UK says not to crop the photo yourself - it is cropped for you - so this tool keeps your full frame and only converts and sizes the file into range.
The official requirements

|---|---|
| File size | 50 KB minimum, 10 MB maximum |

Checked against the official sources below on 7 Nov 2026.
GOV.UK explicitly says not to crop your own photo for the online application. Use the loose framing here only to produce a compliant file; the application does the final crop.
Photos from a booth or shop with a photo code are more likely to pass. If you use this tool, keep edits to size and format only.
How to do it
- Have someone take the photo about 1.5 m away, you standing 0.5 m from a plain light wall.
- Include head, shoulders and upper body - upload it below without cropping tight.
- Create the file and confirm the size range passes.
- Download and upload it during your online passport application.
Common questions
Why does GOV.UK have a minimum file size?
Below 50 KB a photo usually lacks the detail needed for a passport. If your file is under, do not enlarge a small image - retake it with a phone camera in good light.
Can I use a selfie?
GOV.UK says you will need someone to help you; arms-length selfies distort the face and are a common rejection cause.
