Japan online passport photo: 600 x 730 px JPG under 600 KB

Japan's online passport application via the My Number Portal takes a JPG portrait photo of exactly 600 x 730 pixels, at most 600 KB - a different aspect ratio than the 35 x 45 mm print photo, so a resized print photo will not fit. Files over the limit are compressed by the portal itself. This tool crops to the exact 600 x 730 frame and compresses under 600 KB, on your device. Applying from abroad via ORR-net takes jpg/jpeg/bmp/png from 20 KB to 2 MB instead.

The official requirements

File formatJPG (My Number Portal); ORR-net also accepts jpeg, bmp, png
DimensionsExactly 600 x 730 px - wider ratio than the 35 x 45 mm print photo
File size600 KB max on the My Number Portal (the portal compresses larger files itself); 20 KB - 2 MB on ORR-net
Face sizeMOFA photo spec: face 32-36 mm of the 45 mm print height (about 71-80%) - applied here as a height fraction, labeled as interpretation
Other rulesICAO-based MOFA photo spec applies: front-facing, neutral expression, plain light background, taken within 6 months, no editing or beautifying filters

Do not simply resize a 35 x 45 mm print photo: the online frame (600 x 730 px) has a different aspect ratio, so a straight resize distorts or misframes it. Crop to the 600 x 730 frame instead - this tool does exactly that.

If you apply at a counter with paper photos, the print spec is 45 x 35 mm with a 2-6 mm top margin - different from this online format.

How to do it
  1. Take a photo against a plain light background, facing the camera with a neutral expression.
  2. Upload it below and frame the face between the guide lines.
  3. Create the file - exactly 600 x 730 px, under 600 KB - and check that every checklist line passes.
  4. Download and upload the .jpg in your My Number Portal passport application.
Common questions

Why not just resize my print photo?
The online frame is 600 x 730 px, a different aspect ratio than 35 x 45 mm print photos; a straight resize distorts it. Crop to the frame instead.

What if my file is over 600 KB?
The My Number Portal compresses oversized uploads itself, but this tool already delivers under 600 KB so no extra compression is needed.

I live abroad - is it different?
Yes: ORR-net accepts jpg, jpeg, bmp or png from 20 KB to 2 MB. This tool's JPG under 600 KB fits that range too.
